Lesson 9: Roulette Odds

Roulette can be played in the European version as well as the American version. The only difference between the two versions is an added pocket for the double zero number in the American format of Roulette. Apart from this, the other things that are similar include the payouts. This game requires the players to carry their lady luck with them to win their bets. There are chances for the participant to win 35 times the amount he has placed for a single bet. The rule is simple, the less probability for a bet to win, the more payout you have for the same. This can be called as the Straight-ups, which pays out a return of 35:1.

The odds in the Roulette game are very easy to calculate. Depending on the version you choose to play, the wheel is divided into either 37 slots or 38 slots – 37 slots for the European version and 38 slots for the American version. The 0 slots in both the cases represent the house edge. The house edge for the European Roulette is 2.7% where as it is 5.26% for the American Roulette.

From the above chart, it is clear that the European Roulette offers a similar payout as the American Roulette but at the same time offers more odds then the later respectively. This is because of one less slot in the spinning wheel in the European Roulette. Finding a single zero Roulette game can be a difficult task as there would be less house edge when compared to the American Roulette. Online casinos adopt the European style of Roulette and even provide more odds then the land based casinos.

It is also important to note the bets that can be best avoided saving the bets from losing easily. The Straight-ups or the best on a single digit are considered as the hardest to play and are most difficult to win a bet. This bet can be avoided easily. The best way to win is to opt for a combination of numbers bet or place a bet on the outside which consists of the low or high, red or black, odd or even and the dozens. Though the payout for such are even or less when compared with that of a single Straight-up, there are more number of chances to win a bet.
