Lesson 2: Basic Terminology of Roulette

Roulette is a gambling game that is played for fun and entertainment. The winner takes the entire amount that has been placed on a particular number in the game. The game consists of a spinning wheel embedded with 38 number blocks. The participants are requested to place their bets on a particular number. Among the numbered pockets, there is a pocket for 0, which is generally the casino’s number. If the ball falls in this numbered pocket, the entire amount placed for that particular turn will go to the casino. For beginners who are new to the game, there are few terminologies that are the basics for the Roulette game. They are as follows:

  1. 1.    American Wheel - a roulette wheel with 38 numbers in total. Compared to a European wheel which only has 37 numbers, the American wheel has the 00, which allows the participant for the 5 number bets.
  2. 2.    Ball – a small white ball that is spun in the roulette wheel. Fortunes are made and lost when this ball settles into one of the numbered slots present on the spinning wheel.
  3. 3.    Column Bet – this allows the participant to bet on a vertical column of 12 possible numbers at a time. The payout for this type of bet is 2 to 1.
  4. 4.    Combination Bet – this allows the participant to place bet on more than one possible results at a time.
  5. 5.    Corner Bet - when you bet on one of four possible numbers landing at one time. The payoff is 8 to 1.
  6. 6.    Dozen Bet - similar to the column bet, in that you are wagering on one of three different possible groups of numbers hitting; 1-12, 13-24, or 25 to 36.
  7. 7.    European Wheel - Similar to the American wheel, except that there is no 00. This means that the odds of winning are slightly increased.
  8. 8.    Even – Odd Bet – when you bet on either odd or even showing up on the wheel. The payoff for this type of bet is 1 to 1.
  9. 9.    High – Low Bet - when you bet on either a high number (19-36) or low number (1-18) showing up on the wheel. Similar to an even-odd bet, it pays 1 to 1.
  10. 10.  Inside Bet - any bet placed on the number grid part of the table.
  11. 11.  Outside Bet - any bet other than a number bid. These would include red, black, odd, even, etc.
  12. 12.  Red-Black Bet - when you bet on either a red colored or black colored number showing up on the wheel. Pays 1 to 1.
  13. 13.  Split Bet – A combination bet, where you bet on two possible numbers landing.
  14. 14.  Straight Up Bet - betting on one possible number showing up on the wheel. Pays 35 to 1.
  15. 15.  Trio Bet – A combination bet, where you bet on one of three possible numbers landing.
  16. 16.  Zero, Double Zero – Green in color, at opposite sides of the wheel. The Double Zero only exists on an American wheel.
